The Low Water project

What’s it all about?

In 2025, due to a very dry spring and summer with extensive draw down, Rutland Water fell to a low level. At one point the water level was down over 4 meters.

This exposed significant areas of bank and many features which would otherwise be underwater and not visible.

We had the idea of documenting the land and features while the water was low so it could be used as a reference when the water was once again up.

Often the features are fish holding areas and, using this resource, we can fish with greater knowledge of what is beneath the surface.

Use the links below to explore the areas of the reservoir via photos and commentary.

Drone video

Anglers may find the video below interesting. It is an evening fly around Rutland Water, taken from a drone during a period when the water was very low. Several still images from the video have been included in the Low Water pages above.

Many thanks to Blue Kangaroo UK for permission to include the video here and to use stills from the video in our low water pages. See their YouTube channel for more interesting drone videos of the UK.
